Is there such a thing as "rat shot" for a .22 rifle or pistol?

A friend of mine swears he’s used “rat shot” in a .22. I’ve hunted and participated in shooting matches all of my life and the only “rat shot” shells I’ve seen were for shotguns. He says “rat shot” has several pellets in it which I agree, but I disagree they can be used in a .22 rifle or pistol which he swears he has done. Please enlighten me or let me enlighten him.

CCI, Remington and several other brands offer shot shells in 22lr. Some are crimped metal casings and others have a blue plastic cap that holds the shot. I believe it's #9 shot.

Winchester, Anschutz and several other firearms manufacturers offer smooth bore rifle chambered for 22lr shot. I've even heard of rural gunsmiths that take old beater single shot 22, bore out the barrel and offer them for rats, pigeons, and other nuisance critters.
