How would you think the Congress of Vienna, 1815 would react?

If they read the book called Europe 1900's. Reading that a assassination of an archduke would crumble European empires. Engulfing Europe into a war not seen since French Invasion, with another following far more horrific with Holocaust of the Jews. Concluding with European continent left to the fate of a North American power and Eurasia power armed with weapons that harness the power of the sun. You think Monarchs would believe or not?

The Congress of Vienna aimed to maintain the status quo of Europe before 1789 - this meant the overthrow of Napoleon bonaparte and the restoration of the French Bourbon dynasty under Louis XVIII - the brother of beheaded king Louis XVI. The Congress wanted to uphold the 'right of kings' - the ancien regime in which the monarchy was answerable only to god - divine right of kings - which the French Revolution had undermined. The Congress of Vienna also established the Confederation of German states to which Austria tried to manoever itself as the champion and defender of German rights.

I dont think that really the course of history would have changed much even if the Congress of Vienna was aware of events that would unfold - war in Europe and the contest between nations was inevitable and this undermined the Congress of Vienna right from the start.

But like everything time marches on. The same Congress of Vienna that joined together to stop Napoleon and keep the status quo was dead by 1855. The new threat was not France - but now Imperial Russia and her Tsar Nicholas II who was one of the very stone foundations for preserving the status quo in Europe. Soon Europe - Britain, France Austria and Turkey joined together to stop the Russian expansion in the Crimea.

While the major European powers were preventing the expansion of one of its former allies, another Power was emerging in Europe - Prussia. With sucessful wars against Denmark and Austria, Prussia went on to provoke France to a war in 1871. The resulting crowning of the Prussian King Wilhelm 1 as the German Emperor put the last of the Congress of Vienna's aims - the German confederation - to rest. A united Germany under Prussian - not Austrian rule now prevailed.
