Lomi Lomi Today

Today lomilomi has become so popular it is too often competitive. While some see it as a means to further their personal status, and the massage industry views it as a hot spa or clinic modality, I prefer to see it as an evolving traditional system that can offer a world the best of both old and new concepts. These are interesting times that seem to be undergoing somewhat of an exponential curve in consciousness acceleration, especially as baby boomers claim their right to live happy and healthy golden years. People seem to want and need more than the healing options in the current allopathic and even alternative fields of health care. While lomilomi can offer new perspectives in healing, in other ways it is really quite simple. Massage is and always has been one of the most basic ways to care for the body; it keeps the tissues supple, fluids moving, emotions cleared, tensions released, and energies flowing.

In the ancient Hawaiian tradition, purification (via prayer and cleansing) preceded any hands-on massage, as well as most sacred endeavors. The patient's self-defeating thoughts were as critical to make pono (re-align; correct) as physical problems. Individual ties to any negative person, place, or thing were corrected. A higher power and spiritual guidance was always called upon and respected. Gratitude, humility, and integrity were key virtues. In bodywork, many things were frequently used as healing tools, including medicinal herbs, Hawaiian salt, shells, sweat lodges, water immersion, hot rocks, and lomi sticks. Intention and HA (the sacred breath) were essential elements. There were many forms of faith healing, distance or absent treatments, and even forms of exorcism and telepathy that were also practiced regularly.

In midwifery, lomilomi was used to turn breech babies and ease the birthing process. The women would assume a supported squatting position while the upper abdomen was carefully massaged with kukui nut oil with a downward pressure. Once born, lomi was gently applied to mould the features (head, hands, back, hips, and limbs) of the young child.

Sometimes lomilomi was done simply to improve discomfort. Many references found in the Bishop Museum archives describe the benefits as witnessed and recorded by the foreigners. These included relief from over-eating, headaches, fatigue, and general pains. In 1775 writings "the ali‘i… had servants to fan the flies and to massage them." W. D. Alexander wrote of the attendants of the royalty: "One to hold the kahili fly-brush, another in charge of his spittoon, and another who sat ready to lomilomi whenever desired." In the late 1830's James Jarves told of an old Kauai chief who "submits his body to the manipulation of two aged but skillful women." Charles Nordhoff, who visited the islands in the 1870's, wrote "to be lomi-lomied, you lie down upon a mat, loosen your clothing or undress for the night, if you prefer. The less clothing you have on, the more perfectly the operation can be performed. To you thereupon comes a stout native, with soft fleshy hands but a strong grip, and the whole body seizes and sqeezes with a quite peculiar art"; and every tired muscle is "worked and kneaded with indefatigable patience."

In 1939 there are references to "walking massage" by "supporting their weight with heavy sticks or rods" as the practitioner massaged the fleshy areas with his or her feet and bodyweight. All written references generally agree that the practice was very lulling and pleasing when gently performed, and that after the thumping, pounding, squeezing and pinching a pleasant relaxation and sleep follows.

The "temple" styles so prevalent today refer to the body being a sacred temple of the soul. Some movements resemble lua, the martial arts of the kane (men). At one point, in fact, these powerful meditative arts of the kane (men) had to go underground, and soon found expression in the hula as performed by the men. Many hand and foot movements of lua can be found in "temple" bodywork which "dances" around the table. Although the ancient forms of lomi (or romi as it is called in the South Pacific) were done with the hands and feet while the patient would lie on a woven mat on the ground, this bodywork is done on a massage table with one or two practitioners, who use big horizontal movements with their forearms to move energy. The energy work behind this style of modern bodywork comes from ancient teachings of personal empowerment as required during hula and martial arts performances, and was taught in the heiau.

Whether traditional, modern, or "temple" in origin, lomilomi certainly induces profound physiological changes. The full-body routines as practiced today are rhythmic. The moves are both stimulating and soothing. The breath is deep. The attitude is loving and reverent. Ideally the hands are "soft like clouds" yet the pressure is firm. The session is a "right-brain" experience as both the therapist and receiver are deeply blessed. The practitioner is the channel. In the end, that wonderful post-massage feeling of nurtured peace lingers, opening the door for renewal, restoration, and transformation.
